I hadn’t really planned anything for the morning,  but having battled half the night to beat the Internet in the hotel and get the video diary from the previous day uploaded (Niigata Harvest Diary – October 12th) I was wide awake early so headed up to Yamakoshi to see what I could find going on.

It was no surprise to find Daisuke and Toshinori Ishihara preparing the tanks on the truck for harvesting, and it’s never any hardship joining them as always something nice to see, so that was the morning schedule sorted.

Chris Edwards and Jeroen Dregmans were joining the brothers to help with the harvest.

The images below are all captured from the video footage of the harvest, be sure to check it out on our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/MarkGardnerNTVfree),

The 3 Kikusui above were sold almost immediately they arrived in the pond.  After lunch at the Ishihara family home I returned to photograph and video the 2 Ginrin Sanke, one of which I was particularly tempted with as I’m sure it has a good future.

Maybe if it’s still unsold (highly unlikely) in a week or so and I need another azukari project….

In the afternoon I headed over to Koda Koi Farm to see what had been brought in.

I wrote a piece about Koda Koi Farm’s nisai a couple of years ago http://nishikigoi.life/2015/10/14/koda-koi-farm-nisai/.

Towards the end of my trip last autumn I ended up purchasing a couple of really incredibly cheap nisai from the farm, the cost of leaving as azukari was much higher than the purchase cost of the Koi – http://nishikigoi.life/2016/11/05/koda-ginrin-showa-azukari-project/ .

When I arrived Masato was serving some customers from Thailand in the ‘main’ Koi house, before they headed over to the nisai house.  I heard Masato say that one pond was sold Koi, and another azukari Koi.  Whenever I’ve enquired about the harvest of my azukari Koi it has really only been about the female, which will be harvested on Monday.

As I stood looking in the pond of azukari Koi I spotted one that looked remarkably similar to my male, at least insofar as the head pattern was concerned.

Suddenly Masato said, ‘oh Mark san, your azukari fish there, very lucky, big change!’

I bowled him up for a quick picture (there were a couple of water splashes on the lens unfortunately), but will do properly and video once they are both harvested.

The difference a year makes - Koda Ginrin Showa, left as nisai in 2016, right as sansai

I’m certainly satisfied that the above Koi met the objective, which was to prove you can get some damn nice Koi for reasonable money.

Masato san says he’s sure that the one in the mud pond, which is female, is much better than this one, so fingers crossed for Monday’s harvest.

Next week I’ll also get a shot of the Showa at Yagenji.

The Ginrin Showa was the least hopeful of my ‘Humble Azukari Hopes‘, if the other 2 have progressed to a similar level then I’ll be happy.

See video of the Yagenji harvest below.
