On 8th August UK based Koi Wholesale will receive a shipment of 112 boxes of Koi from Japan. In itself this may not appear particulary ground breaking news, however, what is ground breaking is the timing of the shipment, mid summer in both Japan and the UK.
Summer temperatures in Niigata, Japan can easily be in the mid 30’s degrees Celsius, even higher, not generally the weather to send Koi off on a journey lasting upwards of 36 hours.
Mr Nishikigoi, for whom Koi Wholesale are exclusive UK agents, are the first major wholesaler/distributor to attempt such a shipment using the boxes which have been developed by Nagaoka based Nishikigoi Niigata Direct (NND) in conjunction with expanded polystyrene (EPS) box maker TOHO Industries Co. Ltd.
NND have conducted in lab experiments and two actual exports to Asian countries using the EPS boxes. With both exports, fish arrived in excellent condition, even though the outside temperature at both destinations were over 30 degrees Celsius.
According to NND benefits of the EPS box include:
・Strong and durable
・Light weight (50% lighter than cardboard box)
