The primary focus for the last few days at Purdin Koi Farm has been the preparation for and spawning of the 3rd set of parents for 2017, one each of Kohaku, Sanke and Showa.

All 3 of the females used were Koi which had been produced here at the farm.

The Kohaku above is the remaining female offspring of a Kohaku female called ‘Grace’, a special Kohaku for the farm.

This Sanke is one that I have written about previously on Nishikigoi.Life – http://nishikigoi.life/2016/12/12/2016-harvest-highlights-purdin-koi-farm/.  In November she was 5 1/2 years old and 90cm, in the intervening 6 months she has grown approximately 6cm and also increased her girth considerably.

As midnight approached on Monday both the Sanke and Kohaku parent sets started spawning almost simultaneously.  The Showa however showed little or no sign of doing anything.

Following a change of males in the Showa set, the now faithful ‘stud’ male Showa from Isa Koi Farm, of which I’m a huge fan, was drafted into action.  At around 3am things started to get underway with the Showa, resulting in a full house from the 3rd round of spawning.

As I write this, outside in the Koi house the tiny fry are starting to hatch.

Out in the mud ponds the fry continue to grow extremely well.

In this first video you can see the Kohaku fry which were from the spawning of 20th April:

In this later video filmed today you can see the Goshiki fry which were released to the mud pond just 8 days ago, and the Sanke fry which will undergo first selection next week.  In this video we also have a chat with Scott and Bill about the current state of play with the 2017 spawning.

Yesterday we sorted through a small selection of Koi spawned last summer, so just turning into nisai.  When the tosai selection was made at the farm earlier in the year these were Koi that were somewhat smaller than their siblings which were going straight into the grow out pond, yet exhibited enough quality to warrant keeping a little longer.

The 3 Koi below were my favourites in their respective varieties.

Looking forward to the days ahead, as mentioned above, the fry from the spawning on Monday night are now starting to hatch.  Over the course of the weekend those fry will need regular feeds of microscopic dry food throughout the day and night to boost them before release to the mud ponds.

Next Monday sees the start of what will be almost continual selection for the next couple of weeks.
