On 29th March I revisited Perfect Aquatics in Henlow, Bedfordshire, slightly over 6 months since I had previously visited  – http://nishikigoi.life/2016/09/11/visit-perfect-aquatics/.

Perfect Aquatics is located along the A507, a few miles from junction 10 of the A1(M) to the east, and several more from junction 13 of the M1 in the west – click here for Google Map.

When I visited in September last year it was shortly after a new owner for the business had been found, taking it out of administration, and ending a period of significant uncertainty for all involved, not least the team of staff.

If you look at comments on Facebook and Google around last summer many complaints centred on general lack of stock across all departments, Perfect Aquatics origins can be found in Koi, however it is now very much more.  As you can see from the images below there are a huge range of Koi and other products available on the shelves.

I have to say, in terms of Koi and pond related products, there probably isn’t much that the hobbyist could want to purchase that isn’t readily available off of the shelf at Perfect Aquatics.  Whilst so much Koi business is done via the Internet nowadays, there must surely be a huge degree of relief for local Koi keepers knowing that almost anything required in an emergency, be it hardware like water pumps or air pumps, through to medication, is available off the shelf 7 days a week at Perfect Aquatics.

And mentioned, Perfect Aquatics sell much more than just Koi, and the extensive range of support products extends across all departments.  A huge range of aquariums, for example, are on display, large and small.

Of course, for most people reading this it is the Koi selection on offer which will be of most interest.

I have to say the Koi on offer when I visited was one of the nicest and most varied selections I’ve seen on my recent travels.  The prospective visitor needs have no concern that this is just a pet shop, or garden centre, the company’s Koi roots and foundation are still very strong, it is still very much a specialist Koi outlet, headed by Chris Wall.

This Doitsu Ochiba was in the pond pictured above, its origin very different from the Kohaku in the shot in the fact that this is one of the numerous Koi stocked at Perfect Aquatics originating from Yoshikigoi in Poland.  It really is an excellent example of the variety, and understandably carries a price tag in line with that quality.

In an adjacent tank were some more Doitsu Ochiba, around 18cm in length and originating from Hiroi Koi Farm in Japan.  Interesting prospects for anyone wanting to have a go at growing a Doitsu Ochiba on, at a rather more pocketable price than the one above.

As I stood flicking some pellets into another pond several Koi started to catch my eye, even more so when the sign on them said ‘£49.95’.  Like the Doitsu Ochiba above, these were similar sized tosai, also from Hiroi Koi Farm, and very representative of the varieties dealers flock to the farm to purchase in October at harvest time.  You can almost always be sure that if you visit Hiroi Koi Farm in October you won’t be alone, quite often several different parties of buyers can be found there at the same time selecting from the regularly refreshed stock ponds.

The 5 small Koi below were all selected from the above tank of fish and in my opinion represent absolutely excellent value for money at £49.95 each and a real chance to have some fun growing them on.  I later learned that the agent responsible for arranging the shipment of these Koi called Perfect Aquatics to find out if the Showa below was really in the box!

It’s great to see a Koi business having bounced back from being on the verge of closure.  As well as a good selection of clearly very healthy Koi, in a range of qualities, a full range of dry goods, there is much more to see at Perfect Aquatics.

Anyone in the area who hasn’t visited for a while would be well advised to do so, likewise, anyone looking for a day trip out, or passing by along the A1 or M1, would be well served to pop into Perfect Aquatics for a look.

Work will soon start on a cafeteria which will overlook the large outdoor landscaped Koi pond which is presently undergoing renovation as well.
