As detailed in 2 previous posts the 20th Niigata Breeders’ Auction will take place at Yamakoshi Branch Office on 1st March 2017.

In the previous posts – 20th Niigata Breeders’ Auction – 1st March 2017 and 20th Niigata Breeders’ Auction – Listing Update – all the Koi posted shared something in common, they were either stated as being female, or otherwise unknown.  The reason for that was deliberate; amongst the Koi being offered were some very nice male Koi and I will feature those Koi on this post.

Slowly, very slowly perhaps, male Koi are losing the stigma that they once carried, and more hobbyists are actively looking for male Koi, recognising the benefits that they offer.  High quality male Koi are not a ‘cheap option’ any more though, indeed if ever they were….

Here are some of the quality male Koi being offered in the 20th Niigata Breeders’ Auction.

Ozumi Ikarashi Koi Farm, Beni Kikokuryu, Nisai, 32cm, Male

One of 2 Beni Kikokuryu being offered by Ozumi Ikarashi Koi Farm, the other being a 35cm female.  I think this is the nicer of the 2 from the photographs.  I suspect the high demand for Beni Kikokuryu to continue that we have seen over the last couple of years.  I doubt the sex of this Koi will have any affect on the price.

When I first went through the listings that were published a couple of days ago this was one of the stand out Koi in the auction for me, before seeing it was male.  It still remains one of my favourite Koi in the auction.  When posted on Facebook it rapidly received over 2oo likes and was shared numerous times.  Be sure to view the video of this Koi on the auction listing site.

Tancho Kujaku always attract high price at auction, I am sure Yasuaki Kaneko could produce many more of them!  Nice matsubamon, neat round and bright tancho marking.

As I wrote the other day, I really highly rate Koda ginrin, and these 2 male Ginrin Showa are entered into the auction along with an absolutely stunning female.  All 3 are pre-registered for entry into the All Japan Young Koi Show.  The one below and the female would also be good for the International Junior Koi Show.

Nogami Koi Farm, Kohaku, Tosai, 27cm, Male

I featured 2 ‘sex unknown’ tosai Kohaku from Nogami in my auction post the other day.  The Kohaku above, and the 3 below, are all males.  All 4 of these Kohaku have been pre-registered for the Wakagoi Show (the sex unknown Koi weren’t).

Whilst 3 of these are tosai, the one below is a nisai.  You can see why breeders keep nisai small for the purpose of Koi shows when you compare the finish of the Koi below compared to the tosai.  However, I do have my suspicions that this Koi is posted as 25cm in error.  My guess is the bowl is 60cm or 70cm and the Koi really around 35cm.  If so it is also well sized for the International Junior Koi Show which goes to 36cm maximum size.

Marusaka Koi Farm, Kikusui, Nisai, 38cm, Male

Two attractive males from Marusaka Koi Farm.  Both of these are pre-registered for the Wakagoi Show, the Kikusui in 38cm Hikarimoyo, the Beni Kikokuryu in 43cm Kawarigoi.  I do love to see that white line between red and white on Beni Kikokuryu as on the should of the one below.

Kawakami Koi Farm, Hajiro, Nisai, 46cm, Male

Arguably the more attractive of the 2 ‘Hajiro’ offered by Kawakami in the auction, the other being a larger 3 year old female.  Snow white, jet black and spotless white pec fins make this a very striking Koi.

Hiroi Koi Farm, Ginrin Goshiki, Nisai, 40cm, Male

Hiroi Koi Farm,

A strong body shape on this Ginrin Goshiki from Hiroi.  It would seem that the base colour is just starting to transition from grey to black.  The ginrin looks very bright and strong.  The beni plate is nice and clean.  One to nurture…

Shinoda Koi Farm, Doitsu Showa, Nisai, 33cm, Male

I so wanted to post both of these the other day in my first listing, but as I was posting only females I didn’t.  The pick of the Koi being offered by Shinoda in this auction in my opinion.  Both are registered for the Wakagoi Show where they are bang on the upper size limit for their classes, 33bu and 43bu respectively.  The one above of course would also be eligible for entry to the International Junior Koi Show.  Both surely potential Tsubaki Prize contenders.

As mentioned, Beni Kikokuryu attract a lot of attention at the auctions.  Here another example offered by Yamasan Koi Farm.

The 2 males from Kanno Koi Farm rather belie the suggestion that males are skinny.

Maruta Nishikigoi Kohaku Nisai, 45cm, Male

Finally, a nisai Kohaku from Murata Nishikigoi.  I really like this Koi.  A Koi to grow over 55cm when it would compete in the male size classes at the All Japan Koi Show.  Just love the pattern on this Koi.
