The 11th kOis & pOnds cup – 2016 grow out challenge was held this past September 10th, 2016 at kOis & pOnds Quezon City, Philippines. As the title implies, this would be 11th Koi show that kOis & pOnds has mounted. It was way back 2001 when the company held their first Koi show; incidentally, that was also the very first Koi show in the Philippines.
Kenji Tani and Suguru Takahashi (also known as Gonjiro), were among the judges present during that historic first Koi show. In their most recent interview together on a Philippine TV show on pets, they both agreed that the quality of Koi presented in the Philippine Koi Show hosted by kOis & pOnds has been consistently improving year after year.
For this grow out contest, there were two categories: the ‘Jumbo Tosai’ division and the ‘Standard Tosai’ division. Selection of Koi entries started on May 21st 2016 with the option of the Koi keeper to either take the Koi home and grow it themselves, or opt to take advantage of the free azukari (free keeping) in kOis & pOnds Quezon Ccity, Philippines.
The jumbo tosai selection were supplied by two breeders; Mitsunori Isa and Kentaro Sakai. The majority of the jumbo tosai selection coming from Sakai were grand offsprings of the two time All Japan Shinkokai Grand Champion ‘M-LEGEND’.
For the standard tosai division the selections came from Gonjiro Koi Farm, Tani Fish Farm, Isa Koi Farm and Maruyama Koi Farm. All Koi entries, both standard tosai and jumbo tosai were personally handpicked by Mike & Gleci Hernandez, Mikki Swanson and Kenji Tani with the respective breeders of the Koi.
