Years ago, many a weekend would be spent visiting Koi dealers all over the country, and indeed, if I was travelling somewhere and there was a dealer anywhere close by a visit would certainly be on the to do list.  In more recent years I tend to meet up with dealers in Japan, or at Koi shows.  Over the coming weeks and months I hope to get out and visit a lot more people.

This Monday I found myself in Norfolk, around 10 miles from Kings Lynn, home to Coastal Koi – http://www.coastal-koi.com/.  I’d spoken to Dave and Kate Tilbury at the BKKS National and East of England shows last year so took the chance to pop in and see them, and have several cups of coffee.

Coastal Koi is actually situated a little further north than Kings Lynn, as its name would suggest a little closer to the coast, and for those that want to combine a visit with something else there is plenty to see, with ‘The Wash’, Hunstanton and Snettisham Nature Reserves effectively surrounding it.  In addition Sandrigham, complete with its palace, the Queen’s Norfolk residence, is the next village.

Coastal Koi was established in 2002, and since 2006 occupied the 2 of a small row of industrial units it does today. The small door way rather belies what lies within.  Whilst it is not the largest or most spacious of Koi outlets, it is certainly well stocked, in fact there probably isn’t much the Koi hobbyist would want or need that isn’t on the shelves.

The 360 degree images below allow you to scroll around the store and also zoom in, giving a virtual tour.

A large part of floor area is given over to the display of ‘Aqua Drum’ filtration units which Dave imports, uses and recommends.

The main display pond, which presently has some of the most crystal clear water that I’ve seen, something Dave attributes to the ozone unit currently running on it, will soon be switched over to an Aqua Drum combi unit.

The smaller ponds are already run by the Aqua Drum unit for solids removal.

You’ll note the large Ogata Koi Farm banners that adorn the walls of the shop, an indication that Coastal Koi is an agent of Ogata Koi Farm in Kyushu, Japan.  Dave pointed out that they actually buy an ever increasing number of Koi from the ‘neighbouring’ Kyushu Prefecture farms of Okawa and Ueno,  both breeders who I have visited on a couple of occasions.

Coastal Koi also have an off site polytunnel with Koi that are being grown on and Dave stated that the for sale stocks in the shop were a little thin at present, that said there were a couple of Showa that I spotted that I thought interesting.  The pictures below are from the Coastal Koi website.

As with most dealers, an ever increasing amount of business, both dry goods and Koi, is done over the Internet and by mail order, Dave assures me the vehicle below is not the Coastal Koi delivery van.  To get the full story on the Reliant Robin pay a visit to Coastal Koi and ask them.

Dave and Kate will be at the BKKS National Koi Show – http://www.thenationalkoishow.co.uk/ – over the weekend of 25th and 26th June so stop by the Coastal Koi stand and have a chat and look at the Aqua Drum range of products.

If you are anywhere in the region of Kings Lynn then I highly recommend popping in and seeing them.
