I received a surprise phone call from Daisuke Ishihara this morning advising me that Yagenji Koi Farm had put together their first parent sets for 2016 and asking me to visit to see them and get some pics and video.

Needless to say I headed straight to the farm and the video below, which shows both sets of parents, was filmed around 10am.

Two sets of parents had been placed together in adjacent spawning nets in Koi house adjacent to the family home.

The first net contained Ginrin Sanke, 1 female and 3 males, the second net normal Sanke, again 1 female and 3 males.

Daisuke wasn’t there when I visited so I was unable to find out more information about the parents, however I was particularly interested in the Sanke set, the female of which exhibited very strong and heavy sumi.  I’ve been a fan of Sanke with heavy sumi for a long while and I can’t help but wonder whether the female in the video and this Sanke which I photographed at Yagenji in 2012.  It went on to be exhibited at the All Japan Koi Show.

I stopped back by Yagenji at 5pm and through the window of the locked Koi house I could see that the Koi were farm more active than in the video above, a sure sign that they would start spawning at some time through the course of the evening and likely into tomorrow.

I will stop by early tomorrow morning and see how things are progressing.
