Bullfighting is a traditional pastime of many of Niigata’s Koi breeders, taking place in 2 locations in the area. One group holds their ‘fights’ in Koguriyama in Ojiya (located near Shinoda Koi Farm), the other in Yamakoshi in the small village of Nanpei. Both are very well signposted in the area.
It must be stated that the bullfighting in Niigata is completely different to the bullfighting in Spain, for example. The bulls are not hurt or injured, and certainly not killed, in Japanese bullfighting, it is really just a show of strength, likened to sumo wrestling.
Visiting the bullfight is certainly an interesting experience and well worth seeing. The image below is the official poster and includes dates for both the Ojiya and Yamakoshi venues.
The top row shows dates for Ojiya, the bottom row Yamakoshi.
