In 2014 Nishikigoi were made the official fish of both Ojiya City and Nagaoka City.
Now the Niigata Shinkokai are trying to get Nishikigoi firstly recognised as the official fish of Niigata Prefecture and then, as the nation gears up for the 2020 Olympic Games, the official fish of Japan.
At the recent All Japan Koi Show the Niigata breeders started to collect names to support the campaign, and now you can help too. Simply fill out your name, town/city and country in the form below and we will make sure your name gets added to the official campaign forms.
This is a translation of the text which appears on the official name collection form:
‘Niigata Prefecture is the birthplace of Nishikigoi, and over 200 years Nishikigoi have become loved by Japanese people as a swimming jewel in Japanese gardens.
In addition, Nishikigoi are now recognised Internationally with an increasing number of enthusiasts in Europe, the United States, Southeast Asia and around the world.

We believe that Nishikigoi is a symbol of Japanese culture, the fish of the prefecture, and should be recognised as originating from Niigata Prefecture to the world.
Please help us by adding your name to our campaign.’
Please add your name as soon as possible to ensure that it can be included and please pass on to your friends and family, the more names the better, and please be assured that your details will be used for no other purpose than to support the cause.
