There is no doubting the popularity of jumbo single coloured Koi such as Chagoi and Karashigoi with Koi keepers around the world.

With effect from the 2016 All Japan Koi Show, which takes place on 28th-31st January, the All Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association have introduced a new 21st variety class, ‘Mujimono’.  This coincides with the ZNA also introducing the same class at the 2015 All Japan Show held 13th-15th November.

Mujimono will include single colour non metallic Koi, including Doitsu variants, e.g. Chagoi, Karashigoi, Benigoi, Kigoi, Aka Matsuba, Ki Matsuba.

As impressive as large single colour Koi may be it did seem at recent All Japan Shows that there were a disproportionate number in the main winner pools. At the last few All Japan Shows ‘Best Doitsugoi’ prize has been taken by jumbo Doitsu Karashigoi when previously they would have just been entered into Kawarigoi class.  Previously that prize would have been taken by a superb example of Doitsu Gosanke.

In smaller sizes even excellent examples of single colour Koi can’t compete with other multi coloured ‘Kawarigoi’.

Creating the new Mujimono class would seem a very sensible decision, indeed it may explain the considerable interest in ‘Matsuba’ at the recent Niigata breeders auction.
