Today’s task was to carry out the 2nd selection of what Jeroen describes as his ‘metallic mix’ spawning.

The spawning was conducted with the following; 78cm female Purachina (platinum ogon) from Choguro Koi Farm, a male Purachina which Jeroen says was lazy, a male Kujaku, a male Goshiki from Kawakami Koi farm with very dark colouration and deep beni, and finally a Kikusui which Jeroen says seemed to do nothing, and that is evident from the result!

Jeroen’s goal from the spawning was to create a metallic Kuro Goshiki. The image below is a regular Kuro Goshiki.  You can see more in the ‘Goshiki in Detail’ article here – http://niigata-nishikigoi.com/content/goshiki-detail

Imagine the Koi above with the metallic black of this metallic Hajiro from Satoshi Tanaka, and a metallic sheen to the red, and that’s the goal.

The picture below shows the pond which the Gosanke fry were collected from for selection the previous day which was drained down and cleaned, as is done in rotation, before being refilled with water produced from a reverse osmosis unit – more of that later.

In these pictures Jeroen is netting the pond containing the ‘metallic mix’ in preparation for selection.

The first 2 shots below show a range of different styles of fry that were amongst the offspring, as would be expected given that the eggs of the female could have been fertislised by one of several males.  There were single coloured Koi present, Purachina obviously, plus what appear to be Yamabuki now, but will probably become Orenji Ogon due to the Kujaku influence.  Then there are Koi which will likely become matsuba, again Kujaku influence.  Some also exhibit ginrin scales which Jeroen suspects is from the Choguro female Purachina.

This however is the style of offspring which Jeroen thinks, and hopes, is the stepping stone to creating his metallic Kuro Goshiki, only time will tell exactly how they develop, the ‘beni’ is paler and more yellow than Jeroen would have hoped at this stage.

With any spawning, at 2nd selection of Koi just 2 months or so old, it’s impossible to know how good the results will be in the long run, so much can happen.  With these Koi being a complete experiment there is even less certainty but it’s certainly fascinating.
