This is a question that visitors to Japan will often get asked.  However, I maintain that the answer is far from a simple yes or no, particularly for those that answer yes!

For example, how about blowfish testicles?

A week or so ago 7 men visited an upmarket restaurant called Kibunya in the town of Tsuruoka.

Shortly after tucking into their dish of fugu testicles (fugu being Japanese for blowfish) the men starting complaining of numbness in their hands and legs.

It transpired that the fugu had not been prepared by a licenced chef and the men were suffering from tetrodotoxin poisoning, a poison 100 times more poisonous than potassium cyanide and capable of causing death within an hour and a half.

One man ended up critical, 2 others in a serious condition in hospital.  The outcome I don’t know.
